Imagined as the interior of a 1960’s doyenne of Upper East Side polite society, the San Francisco native conceived a motif depicting a menagerie of animals from the city’s zoo abounding within her exquisite garden, having escaped their lesser lodgings in Central Park.

Morris & Co. produced a number of jacquard and tapestry fabrics all woven on hand looms. In this collection, the studio has faithfully reproduced some of these classic textiles, whilst introducing new weave interpretations of the most loved Morris & Co. wallpaper designs. All are suitable for upholstery and curtains.

Jeffrey & Co. of Islington in London printed his papers under the personal supervision of Metford Warner, the Managing Director who set up a special department to handle the work. Morris remained closely involved in the production of his designs, choosing the colours and overseeing the printing. Archive Wallpapers is a selection of 11 iconic designs from the Morris & Co. archive. Reproduced as faithfully to the originals as possible in scale and colour, some have also been given a 21st century twist with metallic inks and modern printing techniques.

The Morris V Collection of prints is a beautiful selection of designs based on original documents in the Morris archive. With new interpretations for the contemporary decorator, these fabrics retain the integrity of the Arts & Crafts at a time when the movement is enjoying a revival in the design world. The hand-crafted feel and unique style for which Morris is known and loved, has been maintained and developed; unusual engraving techniques and earthy colours have been applied to give a bolder, less traditional feel, making this a collection to be used in both period and modern interiors. After establishing ‘The Firm’s’ production of wallpapers, William Morris turned his attention to the production of hand block-printed fabrics. The earliest Morris prints were produced by the printing mill Bannister Hall, but later Morris moved to Merton Abbey and set up his own print works. In producing the Archive Prints Collection, the studio has retained the characteristics of block printing and some of the original colourations. The Collection includes original designs by Morris & Co., with new designs inspired by his woven tapestries and embroideries, painted by the current design team.
Embroideries were an integral part of the Morris & Co. offer, ever since William and Jane Morris taught themselves the art of embroidery to create hangings for their home, Red House, in 1860. The Woodland Embroideries continue this heritage, with designs taking inspiration from the archive as well as William De Morgan’s ceramic tiles, and an ottoman style fabric found in Wightwick Manor, Wolverhampton, one of the intact houses of England almost entirely furnished by Morris & Co.
Launched with the Archive III Wallpapers and Prints, Woodland Embroideries is an exquisitely designed collection of five designs including the glorious, multi-coloured ‘Artichoke’ on silk, to the simple, naive ‘Woodland Animal’ and ‘Woodland Tree’ on linen/cotton.
Celebrating the work of Morris and other eminent designers such as John Henry Dearle, Archive III Prints brings together faithful reproductions of classic fabrics including ‘Tulip’ and ‘Snakeshead’ with new, exciting designs – ‘Rosehip’, ‘Swans’ and ‘Primrose & Columbine’ – inspired by Morris’ ceramic tiles. ‘Grapevine’ recalls the theme often used in Morris’ border decorations for manuscripts, and has been produced from the same lino-printing method as ‘Rosehip’.
